Dan Freeman’s A Joke will be returning to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe August 2018 at the Assembly Ballroom (full details will be available soon: www.assemblyfestival.com | www.edfringe.com)
Three characters with no memory, apparently born into a void, must work out who and where they are. Are they the constituents of a joke, or a story, or is the joke on them?
“hilarious… this break-neck hour of exhilarating theatre.” – International Times
A Joke explores our attitudes to humour, music, stories and life through an exciting and hilarious drama. The characters of The Englishman, The Irishman and The Scotsman approach their barren world respectively with fear, optimism and acceptance. As they adopt one another’s tendencies, and learn by experiment and discussion, they begin to solve the mystery of their own existence and ours. The play boasts razor-sharp wit; slapstick; song and magic to bring the most imaginative show possible to a global stage.
Dan Freeman began his career as a standup comedian and radio writer and performer. He was a regular on The Now Show on Radio 4 for two seasons, and won plaudits for his own series Ectoplasm and Dan and Nick: The Wildebeest Years. He adapted and directed Dante’s Inferno for BBC Radio 4’s book at bedtime. In 2000 he wrote, directed and produced Death Comes to Time for The BBC, the World’s first webcast, starring Stephen Fry, which jointly won the Spoken Word Publishers Association Gold Award for Drama with Michael Frayn. He received The Parsec Award for speculative fiction for his audio drama series The Minister of Chance in 2013. His fans include Neil Gaiman; Steve Conrad and Stephen Fry, who described his writing as “exquisite”. He continues to perform standup comedy and music, headlining at Glastonbury with his band Mundo Jazz. This is his first stage play.

Picardo is… a revelation… I think this might be my favourite show this year at The Fringe. If it’s not then it has certainly set the bar VERY high.”
